PITTSFORD, N.Y., October 9, 2005 — The St. John Fisher
College football team improved to 5-1 overall, as the Cardinals,
ranked 15th nationally, came through with a 28-14 win over visiting
SUNY Brockport tonight in front of 3,244 fans at Fisher’s
Growney Stadium.
Sophomore tailback James Reile (Herkimer/Herkimer) rushed for
a career-high 240 yards on 35 carries and scored three touchdowns
to the lead the Cardinals, while the Fisher defense shut Brockport
out in the second half and gave up just 92 yards over the final
30 minutes. Fisher jumped out to a 21-0 lead. Reile scored on
a career-long 66 yard run
midway through the first quarter, and Noah Fehrenbach (Marcus
Whitman/Rushville) caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Nick
Suchyna (St. Francis/Buffalo) with 2:24 left in the opening period.
Riele scored his second touchdown of the day 30 seconds into the
second quarter on a 34-yard run to put the Cardinals up 21-0,
but the Golden Eagles rallied, scoring the game’s next 14
points.
After a scoreless third quarter, Reile scored his third and final
touchdown with 6:44 left on a four-yard run. Brockport drove twice
into Fisher territory in its final two possessions, but had its
drives ended on downs and an interception from sophomore Steven
Stepnick Iroquois/Cowlesville), his second of the game. Suchyna
completed 16 of 23 passes for 166 yards, while Fehrenbach led
all receivers with eight catches for 94 yards and one touchdown,
and Reile snagged four passes for 59 yards. 2 Gene Lang (C.W.
Baker/Baldwinsville) led the Fisher defense with 16 tackles, including
two sacks, while Gavin Stackhouse (Ithaca/Spencer Van Etten) added
13 tackles and one sack. Senior captain Brandon Banks (Penfield/Penfield)
tallied six tackles, while
classmate Matt Marshall (Fredonia/Fredonia) tallied six tackles
and one pass breakup.
Running backs Craig Fitzpatrick (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton) and Geoff
Gane
(North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) combined to grab four passes
for 13 yards and 15 yards on three carries. Stepnick, who moved
into a tie for third all-time on the college’s careerinterceptions
list (9), finished the evening with three tackles and two more
pass break ups, and Scott Miranto (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda)
racked up four tackles for the Cardinals.
Sophomore kicker Kyle Piccirilli (Albion/Albion) went 4-for-4
in point after attempts, while averaging 39.5 yards per punt,
including one punt inside the 20-yard line. Defensive linemen
Greg Pyszczynski (West Seneca East/West Seneca) and Adrian Ivasic
(Lake Catholic/Mentor, OH) each tallied tackles and one sack,
while junior Shaun Isaacs (Adirondack/Forestport) posted three
tackles and Micah Norton (Elmira Notre Dame/Lowman) had three
tackles as well. Shawn Crandall (Pembroke/Corfu), Dan Reed (Cicero-North
Syracuse/Clay), Michael Sefcik (Susan E. Wagner/Staten Island),
Larry Frawley (Monsignore
Farell/Staten Island), Nick Terranova (St. Joseph’s Collegiate/Williamsville),
Steve Flagler (Vernon-Verona Sherrill/Sherrill), and Matt Driscoll
each made one tackle for a Fisher defense that forced the Golden
Eagles to punt eight times. Fisher will return to action at 1
p.m. next Saturday and will host Norwich University in Empire
8 Conference action. Norwich handed the Cardinals their only loss
of the regular season in 2004, with the win coming on a 34-yard
touchdown pass with 58-
seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
